What Is Family-Based Immigration?

To live permanently in the United States, a foreign citizen needs an immigrant visa. To be able to apply for an immigrant visa, a foreign citizen must be sponsored by an immediate relative, who is older than 21 years of age and who is a U.S. citizen or green-card holder.

There are two types of family-based immigrant visas: immediate relative and family preference.
